Learn To Racewalk!
If you are a fitness walker, casual walker, a former runner unable to continue your running career, or a new racewalker, this notice is for you!
A racewalking clinic will be conducted to familiarize participants with racewalking techniques and regulations as well as demonstrations and individual guidance. U.S.A. Track and Field (USATF) certified racewalking judges will be present to conduct the training.
Racewalking offers another option for achieving personal fitness and is for those of all ages. Most importantly, racewalking is not about speed. Racewalking is a technique or style of walking and is a practical, inexpensive form of exercise.
Please join us at 7:15 AM, just prior to the Al Briede Race in City Park (Roosevelt Mall), on Saturday, May 19, 2012 for the clinic. You must check-in at the Racewalker Check-In table prior to 7:15 AM. The clinic will last approximately 30 minutes. After the clinic, participants will participate in the 3 mile race. The USATF certified racewalking judges will critique all clinic participants and provide follow-up to the participants after the race. There is no charge for the clinic, however, you must be registered for the Al Briede Race to participate in the race. Pre-registration for the clinic or the race is not required but encouraged to prevent any delays on race morning. You may email Pat Driscoll, NOTC Racewalker Coordinator, at racewalking@runNOTC.org to RSVP, or for questions or other racewalker information.
The Great St. Charles Ave. Road Race
The New Orleans Track Club and De La Salle High School hosted the largest Great St. Charles Avenue Road Race in recent history. Five hundred runners chose the famous streetcar and oak tree lined route in uptown New Orleans as their running venue on Saturday, March 31, 2012. There was a race for everyone including a half mile for kids, 5K and 10K races. Lots of out-of-state runners here for the NCAA Final Four tournament joined the NOTC and De La Salle for the uptown party.
The handmade awards were beautifully designed by Morgan Haydel and her art students at De La Salle High School. Taking the top awards in the 10K were David Rumbelow, III in 39:56 and Grace Thacker in 43:15. In the 5K Nick Accardo and Ana Maria Devries were the winners in 16:45 and 19:00 respectively.
Vincent's Italian Cuisine provided the post race pasta and jambalaya, Baker Maid provided the dessert of delicious cookies, beer from Southern Eagle Distributors and All American Chiropractic provided stretching/comfort to the runners. Kentwood Springs Water and Gatorade provided the refreshments on the course.
Thanks to all the volunteers and to our most supportive Board of Directors who are out there race day giving their precious free time so that the NOTC can continue its good work in the community promoting health and fitness. Great job everyone!
